An 18-year-old trumpeter from Upland, California, Jeremy Alvarez has been recognized repeatedly throughout California’s jazz community. In 2015, he was chosen to be the 19th Jimmy Lyons Scholar to Berklee College of Music, receiving a four-year, full-tuition award presented in conjunction with the Monterey Jazz Festival. Alvarez joins such former Lyons winners as Jonathan Pinson (Wayne Shorter), Dayna Stephens (Kenny Barron), and Alex Hargreaves (Danilo Pérez), among others. Selected as a member of Monterey’s 2015 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, Alvarez has had the great honor of playing with trumpet master Arturo Sandoval on three occasions, including being featured with him twice and playing lead trumpet in the Arturo Sandoval Institute All-Star band. He has also been awarded the nationally recognized Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. Alvarez began his studies toward a Berklee degree in music performance in September 2015. He is currently performing in the world-renowned Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, directed by Greg Hopkins, jazz composition professor.
