Jazz in China
Li Xiaochuan is a professor of trumpet at Shanghai Conservatory and one of China’s most recognized jazz trumpet players and composers. Xiaochuan has performed throughout the world with artists such as Pat Metheny, Eddie Gomez, Gast Waltzing, Billy Drummond, and Uri Caine. The sound that Xiaochuan is searching for in his music is an organic balance between Western and Asian melodies. UK-based Jazzwise magazine has called him, "a leading light on the Chinese jazz scene," proving himself to be "a superb technician and an imaginative improviser."
Xiaochuan will perform with the Doug Johnson Trio and discuss the history of jazz in China up to the present day.
