Hip-Hop Culture: Implications for Clinical Practice—Music Therapy Symposium
Hip-hop has provided an important avenue for self-expression, identity exploration, and storytelling of a lived experience. This Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE) session will explore the historical and cultural context of hip-hop and the resulting implications for music therapy. Through didactic and experiential learning opportunities, participants will explore the cultural significance of hip-hop, identify how hip-hop–based music experiences can be integrated into clinical work, and learn technology applications for songwriting and producing hip-hop in clinical settings.
Toni Blackman, a highly respected artist and social entrepreneur, is the first hip-hop artist selected to work as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. Department of State. She was a hip-hop specialist with the Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute, and is currently a visiting scholar with the Music Experience Design Lab at New York University.
