Fresh Prospects: The Shones / Hunting Stories / Siv Jakobsen
After playing together for seven years in Madison, Wisconsin, surf/garage rockers The Shones came to Boston in 2012 to reinvent their sound and style. The Shones’ music is bursting with jangling riffs and hints of twang surfing over flowing rhythms. Every member of the band is involved in the writing process, breeding a unique and collaborative sound that combines far-ranging influences.
Hunting Stories is comprised of brothers Rafael and Jose Sanchez and Ellie Buckland. Formed in New England, they recently recorded their debut EP, Towns, which features uproarious folk-inspired rock and roll. Banjos and violins blend with exposed, heartfelt lyrics focused on friendship, love gone awry, and finding home. The three members of Hunting Stories sing simultaneously, their sound rooted in upbeat, harmonious bluegrass and set to the rhythm of a raucous kick drum.
Siv Jakobsen is a singer-songwriter from Oslo, Norway currently attending Berklee College of Music. Her music is often described as both dark and ethereal, drawing inspiration from her background in traditional Norwegian music and folk artists like Laura Marling, Ane Brun, Joni Mitchell, and Melissa Horn. She is also part of the Boston-based folk duo Siv & Maddie with guitarist, singer, fiddler and songwriter Maddie Rice. Jakobsen’s first album is set for release in early spring 2013.
