Merengue at Carnaval de Barranquilla en Miami

A group of 16 Berklee students, one alumnus, and two faculty members will travel to Miami for the 2011 O/E Arts and Culture Foundation's Carnaval de Barranquilla en Miami. This is the second Berklee group to perform at Carnaval. Directed by Ricardo Monzon, associate professor in the Percussion Department, some of the college's top Latin players will perform at a highly anticipated moment of the festival: The tribute to influential merengue musicians Milly Quezada, Sergio Vargas, and Wilfrido Vargas.

Serenata a la Reina con Berklee College of Music Pays Tribute to Wilfrido Vargas, Milly Quezada, and Sergio Vargas takes place on Friday, March 11, at 8:00 p.m. at the Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler Street, Miami. For more information, visit

Although Berklee has paid tribute to many Latin musicians—Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Rubén Blades, Juan Luis Guerra, Rosa Passos, and Tito Puente among them—this will be Berklee's first concert dedicated solely to merengue. The music covered has been arranged by faculty members Ricardo Monzon and Bernando Hernandez, as well as students performing in the ensemble, and the concert promises to be one of the most lively and inspiring of Carnaval. With the Vargases and Quezada sitting front-and-center enjoying the career-spanning retrospect, who knows if they'll be moved to take the stage and join in the celebration?

Serenata is the opening event of the Carnaval de Barranquilla en Miami, which reflects the essence of the city where different Latin cultures gather to preserve and spread their cultural traditions. Proceeds from tickets will benefit a Barranquilla foundation called Fútbol con Corazón that seeks social transformation through the values of sportsmanship.
