Monday Night Faculty Jazz Series: Marc Rossi Group

Marc Rossi

Marc Rossi and his group, along with specially invited guests, deliver unique, uplifting, exuberant music that includes surprise twists, arching melodies, and vibrant polyrhythms, drawing on Rossi's influences from jazz masters, world music, Indian music, and much more.

The group—Bill Urmson, bass; Lance Van Lenten, saxophones; and Mauricio Zottarelli, drums—will perform music from their critically acclaimed 2008 release  Hidden Mandala and from their new album due in early 2010, Jazz Impressions of a Kriti. In this evening's performance, Rossi will be joined by special guest Geetha Ramanathan Bennett. Bennett sang on Hidden Mandala, where her Carnatic improvisations and melodic enhancement of Rossi's jazz and Indian-influenced compositions led one critic to describe the results as "truly global fusion." She has performed with famed Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu and his world music ensemble, as well as with guitarist Andy Summers of the Police.
