Listen to Yourself: Deepening Artistry and Technique Through Ear Training and Improvisation. A clinic from trombonist and composer Brian Allen.

Allen has performed with Dave Ballou, Anthony Braxton, Gerald Cleaver, Mark Dresser, Ellery Eskelin, Satoko Fujii, Frank Gratkowski, Drew Gress, Roswell Rudd, and Nate Wooley. His current projects include a trio with Tony Malaby and Tom Rainey; solo trombone performances; Brainkiller with pianist Jacob Koller and drummer Hernan Hecht, who also plays in Brian's Mexican Quartet; duos with Koller and Hecht; and performances with the Austin-based Creative Opportunity Orchestra as a core member and composer.

Allen has performed across North America with notable performances in Carnegie Hall, Bang on a Can Festival, College of Santa Fe Electroacoustic Festival, Roulette, The Stone, Knitting Factory, CBGB's, and Barbes. In fall 2008, Allen completed an international solo recital and master class tour of over 20 universities, including Harvard University, Boston University, Arizona State University, Florida State University, and UNAM in Mexico City. He studied trombone with Don Lucas and composition with Mary Jeanne van Appledorn at Texas Tech University, receiving a master's in composition with additional studies at Banff and the University of North Texas. 

Allen has received a music composition residency from the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris and a Meet the Composer Global Connections Grant for Mexico, and was featured on NPR's Sound Clips Series for his sonic investigations of the trombone.  With works for wind, jazz, percussion, and chamber ensembles, Allen has had compositions premiered at the International Trombone Festival, Society for Composers Festival at Rice University, Eastern Trombone Workshop, Oregon Festival of American Music, Texas Music Educators Association, and other jazz, electronic and new music festivals. He was awarded a 2003 composition residency from Houston's Diverse Works for Brainkiller and is a contributing composer for the innovative VoxNovus program 60x60.

Allen has released six CDs: Synapse, six years L8R, Trombone and Contrabass, Brainkiller, Sketchy, and Solo Trombone. He is an artist/clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company.
