Flam! Pan-Asian MicroJam for J Dilla and Olivier Messiaen is David Fiuczynski's Guggenheim composition premiere. New musical ideas are on the horizon at the crossroads of unusual beats, microtonal harmonies, and Eastern melodic inflections and improv concepts. The aim is to create music that sounds like a Gauguin painting—a raw, powerful, extremely colorful mix of Eastern and Western elements.

Flam! uses microtonal bird song transcriptions as melodies. Messiaenʼs flam-like motifs imply and complement rhythms invented by the producer J Dilla and melodic (and rhythmic) ornamentations from ancient Japanese gagaku court music to Chinese folk tunes, to Indian alaps, to Turkish invocations. "Flam!" is a melodic silk road continuum, a musical journey from the East colliding with rhythms and microtonal harmonies from the West.

Fiuczynski is best known for his cult underground band Screaming Headless Torsos and has performed and/or recorded with Jack DeJohnette, Meshell Ndegeocello, Stewart Copeland, John Medeski, John Zorn, Hiromi, and many more.
