Cory Henry and Dennis Montgomery: Anything Goes
Please see the full events listing for upcoming events.
Cory Henry and Dennis Montgomery, two of the finest Hammond B-3 organ players of their generations, will come together to play a spontaneous improvised set that will showcase their organ playing as well as their vocal abilities. There will be no planning prior to the show and their only means of communication will be through their instruments. Experiencing this special performance will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Cory Henry is a multi-instrumentalist and producer with a catalog worthy of a man twice his age. He was a child prodigy, playing both piano and organ at two, and making his debut at the legendary Apollo Theater at six. He has worked in the studio and toured with artists including Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, P. Diddy, Kirk Franklin, Kenny Garrett (he was in Garrett's touring band for three years), Donnie McClurkin, Boyz II Men, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, the Roots, and many others. Since 2012, Henry has been a member of the acclaimed experimental jazz and funk ensemble Snarky Puppy, which won a 2014 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance and a 2015 Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. In 2016, Henry released the gospel-infused solo effort the Revival. Henry is primarily known for harmonically rich organ playing that owes a greater debt to the virtuosic unpredictability of Tatum and Peterson than it does to Jimmy Smith and other members of the Hammond organ pantheon. In his best moments he seems to capture the breadth of the jazz and gospel idioms and produce something altogether new through his unique blending of the two genres. His albums as a bandleader include the holiday set Christmas with You, Leave You Alone, and Gotcha Now Doc.
