Martin Vejarano, a New York–based Colombian percussionist/composer, offers a workshop and master class on the Colombian drum set and the rich musical traditions of the country’s marching bands as well as the traditional gaitas y tambores (pipes and drums) ensembles. Featuring the diversity of Colombia’s traditional drumming as well as his pioneering approach to these rhythms on the drum set, Vejarano will share concepts such as the Colombian clave and its role on traditional rhythm, traditional rhythms and their application to the drum set, and composing from the percussionist perspective. He will perform both traditional music and his own compositions and arrangements written for an original format featuring tuba, trombone, two saxophones, and the drum set.

The workshop will also include a Q&A as well as hands-on time where some students will be invited to play.
