Chucho Valdés: Jazz Batá
Jazz Batá, a new project of pianist, composer, and arranger Chucho Valdés, features Yelsy Heredia on acoustic bass and Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé on percussion and voice.
In 1972, one year before he founded the transcendent Afro-Cuban jazz rock ensemble Irakere, Valdés experimented with a trio that, although largely ignored at the time, proved crucial for his musical development. The trio is composed of piano, acoustic bass, and batá, the hourglass-shaped drum essential in the ritual music of Yoruba religion best known as Santeria.
