Chinese MicroJam Clinic with Yazhi Guo, David Fiuczynski, and Chinese Music Club Students

Yazhi Guo, widely known as the leading suona (Chinese oboe) player in Asia, incorporates improvisations and compositions in traditional, Western, and microtonal styles. He will perform with the Planet MicroJam Institute Ensemble.

Guo, a member of the Beijing and Hong Kong Chinese orchestras for many years, has performed worldwide with orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Switzerland, South Korea Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Belgium’s Flanders Symphony Orchestra.

Guo invented the “movable core,” which greatly expanded the versatility and dynamic range of the suona, allowing him to play chromatically in 12 notes per octave. He also plays sheng (mouth organ), piccolo, dizi (Chinese flute), ocarina, and traditional Chinese percussion instruments. (Guo can even play melodies on straws and leaves.)
