The Berklee Global Jazz Ambassadors, an ensemble featuring the most accomplished graduate and undergraduate jazz players enrolled at the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), will perform at this year's Monterey Jazz Festival. Under the artistic direction of renowned Grammy-winning jazz pianist and composer Danilo Pérez B.M. '88, the BGJI is an honors program at Berklee College of Music with a mission of helping gifted student musicians become leaders of a world community and effect positive social change.

The quintet to perform at Monterey is led by saxophonist and Assistant Professor Lihi Haruvi B.M. '12, an international touring artist and musical mentor who has performed at top jazz festivals from Newport to Panama. The quintet features recent graduates of the BGJI master’s degree program:

  • Jared Henderson M.M. ‘17, an active member of the New York City jazz scene who has performed with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano ‘72 '98H, Jason Palmer, and Julian Lage B.M. ‘08, among others, on bass;
  • Vasilis Kostas M.M. ‘17, who has collaborated with international musicians such as Tigran Hamasyan and Simon Shaheen and performed at Carnegie Hall and the Montreal Jazz Festival, on laouto;
  • Andrew McAnsh M.M. ‘17, who has played at an array of international jazz festivals and studied with Esperanza Spalding B.M. ‘05, John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington '83 '03H, on trumpet;
  • Chase Morrin M.M. ‘17, a 2017 DownBeat Student Music Award recipient who has studied with Vijay Iyer and premiered his own concerto with the Louisville Orchestra, on piano; and
  • Nate Winn M.M. ‘17, who has worked with Pat Metheny ‘96H, Joshua Redman, and Tia Fuller, and who recently performed with Perez, Miguel Zenón B.M. '98, and Ben Street B.M. '88, on percussion.

The band will perform twice at Monterey: Friday, September 15 at 9:30 p.m. on the Garden Stage; and Saturday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pacific Jazz Café. For each set, they will be joined by trombonist Matthew Tung, recipient of this year’s full-tuition Jimmy Lyons Scholarship to Berklee, which was named in honor of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s late founder, James L. ("Jimmy") Lyons, who started the festival in 1958 with a jazz education program at its core.
