The Anthony Fung Quintet is a group of talented musicians who have distinguished themselves as accomplished performers in the Boston area. This concert is part of the Toronto Jazz Festival. Led by Fung, a Canadian drummer in the Berklee Global Jazz Instutite (BGJI), the group also features saxophonist Edmar Colón Gierbolini, Tokyo-born trumpeter Mao Sone, Korean pianist Kyumin Shim, and Canadian bassist Jonny Chapman.
Anthony Fung, a 20-year-old drummer from Toronto, is a Berklee senior pursuing a degree in jazz performance. As a high school student, Fung studied jazz improvisation with Juno Award-winning saxophonist Kirk MacDonald. Fung is currently part of the BGJI, under artistic director Danilo Pérez, and has many mentors, such as John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, and George Garzone. Fung has played at numerous jazz festivals, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, the JEN Conference, and the Ottawa Jazz festival. He has played and shared the stage with the likes of Joshua Redman, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, and Walter Smith III. Fung's quintet is about to issue its debut disc and will tour this summer in support of its release.
Edmar Colón Gierbolini is a 21-year-old tenor saxophonist from Coamo, Puerto Rico. Also selected for the BGJI, Colón has performed with artists such as Joe Lovano, John Patittucci, Danilo Pérez, Miguel Zenón, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Lionel Loueke, salsa stars Luis Enrique and Ismael Miranda, and Ivan Lins. Mao Sone earned a full scholarship to attend Berklee, where he studies trumpet with Tiger Okoshi. He joined BGJI in 2013, and has performed in domestic and international jazz festivals, and has collaborated with jazz greats such as Joe Lovano. Pianist Kyumin Shim, from Seoul, South Korea, has been studying at Berklee on scholarship with acclaimed teachers such as Joanne Brackeen, Danilo Pérez, Ed Tomassi, and Hal Crook. He has also performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Martha's Vineyard Jazz Festival, and Smalls Jazz Club. Jonny Chapman is an acoustic bassist from Waterloo, Canada. In May 2012, he received the Grand Prize award in a competitive scholarship audition, the Kando Award at MusicFest Nationals. He studies at Berklee on a full-tuition scholarship, working with such teachers as John Patitucci, Eddie Gomez, and Hal Crook.
