Daymé Arocena is an award-winning Afro-Cuban vocalist/composer from Cuba. Her extremely diverse music is deeply rooted in the island’s numerous, particular rhythms—one of which is the groove, based upon the 6/8 clave derived from Yoruban musical heritage.

For Lee Abe, a Japanese-born associate professor of the Contemporary Writing and Production Department, this Cuban 6/8 groove that he and his colleagues teach in the CWP’s groove writing class, has been fascinating—yet foreign in many ways. In this live discussion, Lee Abe will interview Daymé and explore how this unique groove is interpreted in many of her compositions, including her masterpiece “Trilogía.”
