What Is the Truman Scholarship?

The Truman Scholarship is a competitive national fellowship for college students pursuing careers as public service leaders. Annually, the foundation reviews over 600 applications and selects 55–65 recipients to be named Truman Scholars who receive $30,000 towards graduate school. The Truman Foundation identifies young people at an important inflection point in their development—when they are college juniors (in the fifth and sixth semesters)—and recognizes and rewards their commitment to devote themselves to public service. Truman Scholars go on to work as "change agents" and leaders in government, law, nonprofits, health care reform, climate change, homelessness reform, and more.
