Letter from the Chairs
Hello Entering and Continuing Berklee Students!
It is our pleasure to work with you in the coming fall 2020 semester. For those of you who have engaged in our remote summer semester, we look forward to continuing to innovate with you. For those of you returning after break, or who are just embarking on your Berklee journey, we look forward to adding your voices to the conversation of performance reimagined.
The world of live performance has changed greatly, but in the Ensemble Department our values remain the same: to foster the development of technical skills needed for collaborative musical performance, to empower creative expression, to expand stylistic knowledge, and to provide space to showcase the culmination of your work. Our faculty have worked diligently to redesign their curricula to reimagine how we nurture musical connection—to each other and to the artists and genres studied—while in this new digital space. We are immensely proud of the work you all have been able to produce, the creativity employed, and the feedback we have received.
The world is not only changing musically, but socially as well. It is not lost on us how important music has been in providing social commentary and healing during the most challenging times in history, and how important it is now that we provide space for you as emerging artists to explore your voice as you continue in this tradition. Because of this, we are honored to join the Performance Division under the theme Back to Berklee: Healing the World Through Music (A Call to Action). The Ensemble Department has always been the epicenter of special showcases and student performances. This semester, our events will align with this goal of reflection through music.
Lastly, in these uncertain times, we want you to know that our commitment to you and your growth is unchanged. Our staff is available to you Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., to answer any questions you may have. During these times you can make an appointment with your chairs to assist you in achieving your goals. Most of all, we cherish your involvement and our relationships with each of you. We invite you to start or continue that connection now by sharing your musical moments of inspiration through performance. You can connect with us via Instagram (@berkleeensembledepartment). We love to see how you are redefining your artistry in this virtual era.
We look forward to working with you!
