What We've Been Up to
This semester, the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) put on a number of programs as a team and in partnership with Boston-area resources. In March, REACH Beyond Domestic Violence offered multiple Intimate Partner Violence Awareness workshops for faculty, staff, and students. Throughout the semester, the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center offered workshops focused on topics related to sexual violence prevention and response. The first event of the ongoing Moving Forward speaker series was held on March 29 and featured Jamie Washington and Maura Cullen presenting foundational concepts around social justice, equity, and inclusion. Following the talk, the CDEI cohosted several campus dialogs where community members could come together and discuss the issues explored in the session.
In April, the CDEI hosted an open house in their new home at 921 Boylston Street and enjoyed welcoming the Berklee community into the space. Two events for Berklee community members who identify as people of color were hosted in April: the Sisterhood Circle and the Brotherhood Gathering. Both events were very well received and will become part of the CDEI’s recurring repertoire. At the end of April, the Diversity and Inclusion team partnered with Berklee’s LGBT+ United student group to screen the film Real Boy about a young transgender man and his mother. The screening was followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director and led into the LGBT+ United group’s Pride Week weekend events.
The Equity team partnered with Berklee’s Student Allies in Anti-Violence Education (SAAVE) to provide a variety of programs during Sexual Assault Awareness Week from April 16 to 20, including a discussion of sexual violence prevention, the release of SAAVE’s Consent Zine 2018, and participation in the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s Walk for Change 2018.
The CDEI is in the final stages of hiring its full staff. The Equity team will be hiring a deputy for investigations in the next couple of weeks, and the CDEI as a whole will be hiring an administrative coordinator and an outreach assistant along the same timeline.
The CDEI is very excited to serve the Berklee community moving forward.
