In Their Own Words

Ted Kurland is a 1973 graduate of Brandeis University, where he earned his degree in economics. While a senior at Brandeis, Kurland was hired as an agent by Boston-based Music Unlimited Associates, where he quickly began to build a roster of distinguished and internationally acclaimed artists. Kurland's first client (and now lifelong friend) was multi-Grammy Award-winning jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. After Burton, many other top names followed, including Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Charles Mingus, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, and Sonny Rollins.

After his apprenticeship with Music Unlimited Associates, Kurland started All American Talent with two partners in 1974. In their first year, they were featured in a Boston Globe Magazine cover story on the best "young entrepreneurs" in the Boston area.

In 1975, Kurland formed Ted Kurland Associates and within a year began another important lifelong association-with a new 18-year-old guitar sensation from Lee's Summit, Missouri named Pat Metheny. Metheny went on to become one of the preeminent musicians and composers of his generation, selling millions of recordings worldwide, earning multiple Gold albums, 17 Grammy Awards, and the top spots on music polls year after year.

The management of Pat Metheny's career gave Kurland an introduction to the business enterprise of film scoring and soundtrack production, international publishing, recording contract negotiation, international marketing of record sales, video licensing, video production, international TV licensing, and the coordination of international tours. He was the first to bring a full production of lights, sound, and complete staging into the former U.S.S.R.

In 1993, Kurland was chosen to be a featured panelist at the International Music TV Programmers Conference in Maastricht, Holland, where he screened the award-winning Pat Metheny Group music video More Travels, which he executive produced. In 1993 the video won Japan's Ad Lib Magazine Award for Best Music Video.

Currently, Ted Kurland Associates represents a diversified roster of internationally acclaimed performers from a variety of musical genres. Some of the agency's clients include Pat Metheny, Ornette Coleman, Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Sonny Rollins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Branford Marsalis, Béla Fleck, Roy Haynes, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Ted Kurland Associates is also the exclusive worldwide agency for all tours produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Ted Kurland resides in Newton with his wife Ann and sons Alex and Eli. He has been an active volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) for many years and has served multiple terms as a regional board member as well as a board vice president. He is also a member of the advisory board of the New Repertory Theatre and a member of the board of governors at Tufts Medical Center.
