Jeff Shames, Chair
Original Appointment: June 2004
A resident of Newton, Jeff Shames is currently executive in residence at MIT's Sloan School of Management in Cambridge. Previously he was the chairman of MFS Investment Management and of the boards of trustees of the MFS funds.
Shames joined MFS in 1983 as an industry analyst. He became chief equity officer in 1987, president in
1993, and chief executive officer in 1998. After choosing a new CEO in 2002, Shames retained the
chairman title until his retirement in February 2004.
Shames graduated from Wesleyan University in 1977 and MIT Sloan School of Management in 1983. Between college and graduate school, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Fiji and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.
Shames is a member of the boards of trustees for City Year, a national service organization; Hurricane
Voices, a breast cancer foundation; and the X Prize Foundation which successfully concluded a challenge
grant for the first commercial space vehicle. He serves as a member of the Dean's Advisory Board of the
Sloan School at MIT.
He is an avid jazz enthusiast.
