Music Where It Counts: Update from Cape Town

Guguletu Clinics 2012 CTIJF

When the 6-year old trumpeter walked up on stage with this fellow band mates, we thought is was pretty cool.  When he played the melody along with the band, we smiled with surprise.  When he took chorus after chorus on a traditional South African tune our minds reeled at the potential.

Global Outreach Through Music: Update from Cape Town

Soon after the team arrived in Cape Town, we were brought to the 2012 Cape Town International Jazz Festival's (CTIJF) opening event at The Fugard Theater.  Festival founder Rashid Lombard, producer Billy Domingo and director of training and develop Craig Parks kicked the week off with an excellent showcase of student bands from Cape Town and Cape Flats.

SXSW is crawling with Berklee bands

SXSW is always always a hotbed of activity for alumni and student bands from Berklee and this year is no exception.  Scouring the Official SXSW showcases and parties, and Unofficial shows happening all over Austin, I spotted at least 60 bands/artists that include alumni or students. That means the real number is probably way higher. Of course, among these were the bands that played Berklee's Seventh Annual Official SXSW Party on the Friday of SXSW Music.

Berklee at SXSW: Seventh Annual Day Party

Last week dozens (hundreds?) of Berklee alumni, students, faculty, and staff traveled to Austin, TX to participate in the SXSW 2012 Music, Film, and Interactive Conferences. We played shows, threw parties, presented and attended panels, networked with fans and industry pros, and consumed massive amounts of barbeque.

Berklee Alums Rock CMJ

Once upon a time Berklee was a jazz school. And while jazz is still alive and well in our community, we've come a long way since, and these days our alumni are doing amazing things in R&B, hip-hop, electronic, indie-rock–you name it! Our 5th annual CMJ Music Marathon Showcase was a great example of this, pulling in alumni acts from Boston and beyond.

Rhythm Road 5: A string band in South Korea

It's the Earth Stringband's final stop on the Rhythm Road, its grand five-week musical ambassador tour of southeast Asia under the U.S. State Dept. and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Here in South Korea—from From Seoul to Jeonju to Youngdong—the four intrepid Berklee alumni encounter maybe the widest range of music yet—everything from updated trad to a gong jam to indie rock to non-updated trad to some serious K-pop. Here they jammed with the popular Korean musician Jang Sa-lk.

Berklee Alumni Bands at CMJ - Add Yours!

This week in NYC, CMJ Music Marathon takes over the city with showcases, panels, and events all over town. Berklee will be right in the middle of the action. In addition to our fifth annual showcase on Friday, featuring Bleu, Sarah RabDAU & SEA, Endangered Speeches, Julia Easterlin, Particle Zoo, Electric Touch, and Da'Raiya, we'll be trying to catch as many alumni bands as we can around the city. Here's our list - add yours if you know of others playing!
