Re:Tool - Music Technology in Performance and Production will provide you with the opportunity to learn about how laptops, turntables, DJs, virtual instruments, mobile apps, and devices are finding a place in the most current productions and performances, influencing how we interact as performers and users. You will gain perspective on the tradition of some of the most recent developments in music, including hip-hop, techno, turntablism, beat making, remixing, and the combination of these new forms with jazz, classical, and popular music. Berklee will be sharing this content in a unique format for the first time at our new campus in Valencia, Spain.

Classes will include Turntable Technique, Listening Like a Producer, Production Master Class, Synthesizer Programming, Music Production with Ableton Live, Art and Tradition of Hip-Hop, Song Demo Production, Production and Performance with Model Apps and Devices, and more.

Who are the instructors?
The program will be taught by Berklee faculty members.

What's the schedule?
Clinics generally will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and concerts take place in the late afternoon and evening.

  • Turntable Technique: The Art of the DJ—This media-rich performance seminar traces the history of hip-hop culture and the revolutionary use of the turntable as a musical instrument from the street to symphony hall. This class is for anyone, from the curious to DJs and electronic musicians looking to expand their knowledge of the roots.
  • Listening Like a Producer—Whether you are programming dance tracks, writing songs, making hip-hop beats, or producing records, developing of your listening skills can transform your musicianship and take your art to new levels. This seminar is packed with concrete, practical tools to help music makers of all levels "listen like a producer."
  • Production Master Class—Professional, personal feedback of your CD, demo, or live performance. Feedback includes strengthening your material, focusing your artistic vision, finding your voice, refining arrangements to emphasize your strengths, and realizing professional standards of production and engineering. Recordings can be in any style of vocal or instrumental music.
  • Synthesizer Programming—Synthesizer programming plays an important role in the development of original sounds and effects for a broad range of entertainment media, from pop songs to television and film. This session will provide an introduction to the building blocks of programming a synthesizer, examine different types of synthesis technologies, and present examples of sound design in a variety of production settings.
  • Music Production with Ableton Live—Ableton Live has gained immense popularity in recent years for its ability to inspire musicians from all walks of life to rethink how they produce and perform music both in the studio and on stage. This workshop will provide an overview of the program’s creative tool set and explore its capability as a platform for pop production, remixing, and DJing.
  • Special Lectures—Presentations on improvisation using various new topics, such as song demo production, production and performance with model apps and devices, and more.
  • Evening Jam Sessions—A place where you can play your music for and with each other.
