Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy Summer Institute
 
   

The Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy Summer Institute is a Specialty CMTE course that will enable music therapists to expand and integrate their knowledge of issues related to end-of-life care in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices. Participants in the institute are afforded the unique opportunity to learn the clinical needs of terminally ill clients and their families and develop innovative treatment plans to meet these needs in a clinical hospice setting. Professionals who have successfully completed the program will earn 50 Specialty CMTE credits. Space in this program is limited.


Program Objectives

  • Learn to identify the clinical needs of people with terminal illness.

  • Create and evaluate music therapy interventions to meet those needs.

  • Learn how to establish a new music therapy program in an end-of-life setting.

  • Identify funding sources to establish a program.

Instruction will take place in the Music Therapy Department, 1140 Boylston Street, Room 2N.

Post-course homework
There will be a post-course homework assignment, which will take students, on average, four hours to complete. The instructor is available for assistance during this time. Once the assignment is completed and emailed to the instructor, the CMTE credits are earned.


Instructor

Russell E. Hilliard, PhD, LCSW, MT-BC is a board certified music therapist and a licensed clinical social worker. He is executive director of Seasons Hospice, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Hilliard has established several music therapy programs, resulting in more than 20 new full-time music therapy positions in hospices throughout the nation. His research has been published in a variety of scholarly journals, and he is a frequent presenter at conferences.

The program will be coordinated by founding chair of Berklee's Music Therapy Department, Suzanne B. Hanser, Ed.D., MT-BC. Hanser is past president of both the World Federation of Music Therapy and the National Association for Music Therapy. She has published research in integrative medicine and was named by the Boston Globe as one of 11 Bostonians Changing the World. Hanser also serves as music therapist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.


Eligibility

The institute is designed for music therapists who wish to develop a specialty in hospice, palliative and end-of-life care.


Residence Hall Housing

A limited number of residence hall spaces are available for program participants. Meals are provided in the college's dining hall. There is no parking available at the residence hall. Billing Information

Bills for this program will be mailed 30 days prior to the start of the program. The bill will include a payment coupon and return mail envelope for your convenience. It will have instructions on how to make payment using the Internet, phone, and bank-to-bank wire transfers; it will also include the due date for the payment. Tuition and housing fees are to be paid together, unless you are living at an off-campus location. Payments are due in full one week prior to the start of the program. This will expedite your registration. Payment on the date of registration is highly discouraged. If you are experiencing difficulty making your payment by the due date, contact our offices for assistance. If your application was not received and processed in time for you to have a bill sent in the 30-day period, call the Office of the Bursar to check your balance. A bill will be mailed regardless of when your application is processed and it will indicate "Late Add." While no additional charges are assessed for this, you are still responsible for making the payment within the due date guidelines.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Any student withdrawing from a special program must complete an exit interview with the director of that program. Students must complete the program in full to receive CMTE credit. Partial CMTE credit cannot be granted.

Standard Withdrawal
Students withdrawing from the program are eligible for a tuition (and housing rental charges, if applicable) credit according to the following schedule:

During the first day of class: 50% credit
After the first day of class: No credit

Medical Withdrawal
Students forced to withdraw for medical reasons may be eligible to receive a prorated adjustment of tuition for the program in which they are registered. If applicable, the housing fee may also be prorated. A medical withdrawal can be considered only if accompanied by written verification from a doctor that the student could not complete the program due to the disability.

The Berklee Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy Summer Institute is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 50 Specialty Continuing Music Therapy Education Credits. Credits awarded by CBMT are accepted by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). The Center for Music Therapy in End of Life Care (P-092) maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.
