Are there scholarships for the Five-Week Program?

July 12–August 15, 2014

Berklee offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships to the Five-Week Summer Performance Program. Students seeking financial assistance must first register and then complete an online application to the program. Once the online application is received and processed, students will be emailed detailed information regarding the online scholarship application requirements and a link to submit their material to be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Scholarship applicants are required to submit links of a maximum of three (3) YouTube performances and a short essay highlighting their musical and academic achievements. Generally, most scholarships awarded range from $500 to $1,500 with a limited number of full-tuition scholarships available (housing not included).

The deadline to apply for scholarship consideration to the Five-Week Summer Performance Program has been extended to March 21. Scholarship decisions are issued by April 28. The scholarship selection committee will award music students who are most likely to benefit from the program based on the their demonstrated talent and potential, with preference given to students enrolled in high school or secondary school. There is no federal aid available for this program.

All program participants will have the opportunity to sign up for a live audition during the program for scholarship consideration towards Berklee's full-time program or the following year's Five-Week program.

Jazz Workshop Scholarship

The Jazz Workshop is a high-level workshop/ensemble that operates within Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program. Berklee seeks to recruit some of the most talented young jazz students in the world for this workshop. Students selected for this workshop are awarded a scholarship covering tuition, room and board, comprehensive fee, and registration fee.

Jazz Workshop Scholarship applicants are required to submit links of a maximum of three YouTube performances and a short essay highlighting their musical and academic achievements. We recommend that the web postings include an up-tempo song with a swing feel, a medium-tempo swing feel tune (MM between 110 and 130), and an odd-meter piece* with an even eighth-note feel. Each example should be about three minutes in length and be performed with a band (as opposed to a solo performance).

(*The odd-meter piece should be submitted in place of the technical exercise.)

The deadline to submit for scholarship consideration to the Jazz Workshop is March 1. Students selected for the Jazz Workshop will be contacted directly and invited to participate by April 1. Candidates who are not chosen for the Jazz Workshop will be automatically considered for a partial scholarship towards the Five-Week Summer Performance Program and will receive a decision by April 28.
