What are the stylistic considerations of improvisation? Who does it? How do we learn it? How does it relate to the composer's craft? Why should all instrumentalists—drummers, guitarists, bassists, pianists, wind players, string players, and vocalists—learn this art? These questions will be our guide as Berklee College of Music presents its first ever seminar on improvisation at the campus in Valencia, Spain.

The workshop is for all musicians—from classical, to pop, rock, jazz, and more—who are interested in learning the art of improvisation from the blues and jazz traditions.

The Art of Improvisation will present classes in lecture and master class formats, enabling students to learn about improvisational techniques and practice them in the master class, both in performance and composition.

Who are the instructors?
The program will be taught by Berklee faculty members.

What's the schedule?
Clinics generally will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and concerts take place in the late afternoon and evening.

  • Chord Scales and Voicing—How the improviser and composer uses chord scales to create melody over chords, harmony, and chord voicings.
  • Style Labs—The elements of a wide variety of blues and jazz styles of improvisation will be discussed. Insights into practicing improvisation will be presented.
  • Master Classes—Students will discuss and put into practice the skills and techniques discussed in the morning classes. The master class will offer everyone the chance to gain improvisation skills using materials provided in class or their own songs. Students will work in a helpful, non-critical environment with faculty who are world renown for their knowledge, teaching skills, and empathy with students.
  • Special Lectures—Presentations on various musical and educational topics of interest.
  • Evening Jams—A place where you can play your music for and with each other.
