Berklee College of Music Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE) Scholarship

Eligible candidates must:

  • have citizenship and legal residence in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, or Venezuela.

  • be a songwriter/composer writing in a contemporary style.

  • submit works that are the sole creation of the individual applicant. Partnerships or group submissions (e.g., applications from bands) will not be considered.

  • be eligible for undergraduate study in the United States and have successfully completed secondary school prior to July 1, 2010.

  • be proficient in both written and spoken English.

  • be prepared to begin studies at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, in September of 2010.

  • be either an SGAE member or unaffiliated with any author's rights society.

Application procedure:

  • Create an account with Berklee admissions (apply.berklee.edu)

  • Complete the Berklee/SGAE Scholarship application form.

  • To complete the application for an SGAE scholarship, you must email becas@sgae.es with the following information:
    • SGAE membership number (your own number or your parents') or a statement that you are not a member of any author's rights society.
    • The URL to a website with audio or video samples that will let us assess your artistic experience. Samples must be hosted on a personal web page or portfolio site such as myspace.com or portalatino.com. Do not email audio or video files.
    • A short letter, written in English, explaining your artistic goals.
    • Your curriculum vitae in English.
    • A certificate stating that you completed your secondary school education before July 1, 2009.
    • Your audition site preference should you pass the first round: Mexico City (Mexico), Buenos Aires (Argentina), or Madrid (Spain).

  • The scholarship committee must receive your application no later than November 24, 2009.

For Mexico City, Mexico, finalists will be announced on December 21, 2009, and auditions and interviews will be held in early February 2010. For Madrid, Spain, finalists will be announced on January 21, 2010, and auditions and interviews will be held in early March 2010. For Buenos Aires, Argentina, finalists will be announced on February 22, 2010, and auditions and interviews will be held in early April 2010.

Preference may be given to those candidates who apply the use of technology in the development of their creative works. Recipients of the award must demonstrate sufficient financial need as determined by the selection committee.
