Crime Statistics and Clery Act
Jeanne Clery Security Act
Under the terms of the Campus Security Act, Congress has mandated that all colleges make public their crime statistics. These statistics are made available not only to the college community, but are reported to the Department of Education also. Statistics for all U.S. colleges, including Berklee, are made available by the Department of Education here.
The law has been amended in recent years to require that colleges report not only crimes that occur on their property, but also crimes that occur in the local neighborhood. By amending the law, Congress is attempting to provide the public with some sort of measure of the prevalence of crime to which a member of any college community may be exposed.
Below are Berklee's crime statistics for calendar years 2003 through 2007. Crimes are listed in two segments, the first showing crimes with occurred on Berklee property, and the second showing crimes which occurred in the neighborhood (Boston Police Department District 4). Neighborhood crime statistics were provided by the Boston Police Department.
The following statistics reflect crimes reported to the Public Safety Department that occurred on Berklee College of Music property. This information is provided as part of Berklee's commitment to safety and security on campus, and is in compliance with the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, which requires posting of the previous year's crime data by August of each year.
If you have any questions regarding these statistics, or any of the policies or services of the Public Safety Department, please contact Roy J. Murphy, CPP, CFE, Director of Public Safety, at 617 747-2304.
