Berklee Emergency Notification System (BENS)
The Berklee Emergency Notification System (BENS) is a mass notification system that has the ability to send electronic messages (email, voice message, and text) to the Berklee community. When a serious crime, a natural disaster or a man made emergency occurs or is about to occur, which poses an immediate threat or will impede safe and effective education, BENS will be used to communicate to those that may be negatively affected by the incident or emergency. In addition, the following methods may also be used depending on the nature of the incident and the resources available: social media; bullhorns; person-to-person; PA's and intercoms.

Faculty and Staff
Complete the Faculty and Staff BENS Enrollment.

Click the "Log In" button on right
Enter your user ID & password, click "Submit" button
Click the "Student" button on right
Click "My Contact Info" within the "Check In" section
Enter the appropriate info in the "Emergency Info" area and submit.

How does the college define an emergency?
An emergency is when a serious crime, a natural disaster or a man made emergency occurs or is about to occur, which poses an immediate threat to the Berklee community or its assets. Examples include, but are not limited to: an active shooter; use of a weapon; severe weather; a fire; a chemical leak; structural damage.
Who will send the emergency messages?
Berklee's Public Safety Department is responsible for the creation and sending of messages.
How will I be contacted in a college emergency?
All students and employees with a Berklee.edu email will receive email messages. Employees will receive voice messages on their campus phone, depending on the situation. Students will receive voice messages at the local number they provided at the time of registration. If you provided a cell phone number, you will receive voice and text messages there as well. If you provided an alternate email address, you will also receive a message there.
I see a caller ID display of 617 266-1400 on my phone. Who is this?
When Berklee sends a call out using BENS, it will always display Caller ID information. The number listed is the Berklee College of Music information line. There is no need to call that number.
I am receiving text messages from 231-77. What number is this?
This is the primary SMS code number for the BENS system. If you receive a message from 231-77 you should follow the instructions or seek out further information on berklee.edu. We recommend that you assign BENS to 231-77 in your phone address book. Note: a secondary SMS number of 63079 may be used in very rare instances.
Why are emergency messages sent in more than one way?
An emergency can happen at any time and while you are in any place. Having more than one way for Berklee to contact you helps ensure that you will be sent the necessary notification and information as quickly as possible.

The Berklee Emergency Notification System (BENS) allows storing of multiple phone numbers and two email addresses. Your Berklee phone number and email address have already been entered into BENS. By filling out a web-based form, you can add another telephone number and email address and a cell phone number.
Please make sure that you have prior permission to add contact information for any individual other than yourself. Misuse of the Emergency Notification System by placing unauthorized contact information constitutes a violation of the Berklee College of Music Acceptable Use Policy.
How will my contact information be used?
The information you provide will be used only by Berklee and Blackboard Connect-Ed, our vendor, for the purpose of emergency notification.
Can I provide an international/overseas telephone number for a contact?
No. Voice and text messages will only be sent to 10-digit telephone numbers within the United States. However, email messages can be sent to any valid email address. An alternative method for international contact is the Public Safety Twitter account @BCMPublicSafety.
Will the college contact parents to notify them of a college emergency?
Parents are encouraged to monitor Berklee.edu and the Public Safety Twitter account @BCMPublicSafety for updates on emergency events.
Will I get the same message by telephone, text message and email?
They will all contain the most important information and instructions. Because of length limitations, the text and phone messages will be shorter. You may incur a charge for text messages, depending on your service provider and calling plan.
Can I sign up to receive (SMS) text messages on more than one cell phone?
No. You can only receive text messages at one cell phone number. You can opt to receive voice messages on multiple phone numbers.
Can I receive both text and voice messages on the same cell phone?
Yes. Please remember you may incur a small charge to receive text messages, depending on your service providing/calling plan.
I received the emergency notification email, but when I clicked the link to play the audio version of the message nothing happened. Why?
You may not have a default media player like Windows Media Player or QuickTime installed. Download a player from microsoft.com or apple.com and install on your computer to listen to messages. Please call your computer support line for assistance: for students, use extension 8800; for faculty and staff, extension 2238.
When I answered my phone I received the message but missed the information. What should I do?
If you are receiving the message live, you can replay it by pressing the star key (*) at the end of the message. If you are retrieving the message on your voicemail, follow your voice messaging system’s prompts to listen to the message again. You can also check your email to locate the link to listen to that message.
What if I opted out of receiving BENS messages, but later decide I would like to opt in again?
You may request to begin receiving text messages by texting "SUBSCRIBE BCM" to 231-77. BENS re-initiates the opt in process and sends you a confirmation request.
If I change mobile phone providers, do I need to opt in again?
No. Once your phone number has been opted in, it stays registered in the system.
I received the phone message, but it kept repeating. Why?
The system does its best to detect whether it has reached a live person or a voicemail. Sometimes loud ambient noises may cause the system to loop. If this happens, use the mute feature on your phone or move to a quieter location to prevent the message from repeating.
I received the phone message but the beginning message was cut off or the message repeated. Why?
Sometimes the system believes it has reached a person and starts playing the message before the beep tone. If you receive a partial message from Berklee Public Safety, seek out additional information on berklee.edu.
