December 8, 2005 — Berklee College of Music student and Seattle native Robert Hanlon will be performing at the Maple Leaf Grill on Wednesdays December 21, December 28, and January 4. The Maple Leaf Grill is located at 8929 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA. The shows are all ages and begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information please call (206) 523-8449.

Saxophonist Hanlon, currently studying at Berklee on a Presidential Scholarship, is using the winter break as an opportunity to showcase his playing, which has won soloist awards at festivals including the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and the Essentially Ellington Competition. The show on December 21 will be a night of mostly improvised funk songs. Joining Hanlon will be Hamilton Boyce on guitar, David Balatero on bass, and Ryan Batie on drums. December 28 and January 4 will be jazz shows, featuring standards and original tunes, with Ian Johnson on guitar, Allison Wood on acoustic bass, and Sean Hutchison on drums.

Hanlon is pursuing a double major in jazz composition and music business/management at Berklee. He explains, "A degree in jazz composition will allow me to expand my musical mind." As for music business, "I figured that knowing the ins-and-outs of the industry would help with my success as a musician."

The Berklee College of Music Presidential Scholarship is a grant that was established to bring the nation's best young musicians to study at Berklee at no cost to them or their families. Presidential Scholars attend Berklee for four years, with all college tuition, housing, and fees provided at no charge. While such awards are not unknown for student athletes in the U.S., this program is the first of its kind by a music college. Five Presidential Scholarships were awarded for students attending in the fall of 2005, and five more will be added annually over the course of the next three years, to reach a total of 20 students.
