BOSTON, MA, February 24, 2005 Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees Chair Allan T. McLean has announced the appointment of Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot to the Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees. A resident of Boston, Ms. Lawrence-Lightfoot is a highly acclaimed sociologist and education professor at Harvard University, where she did her doctoral work in the Sociology of Education. She has authored numerous works in the academic fields of school culture and the sociological development within families, communities, and schools.
She has received national awards and distinctions for her research, writing and teaching. The list of honors includes the prestigious MacArthur Prize Award, Harvard's George Ledlie Prize for research, 25 honorary degrees from colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and was named a Spencer Senior Scholar. Swarthmore established an endowed professorship in her name and Harvard bestowed her with the Emily Hargroves Fisher Endowed Chair, which will become The Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot Endowed Chair upon her retirement. This will be the first endowed professorship in Harvard's history to be named after an African American woman.
Besides her work as an author, professor, and researcher, she sits on many boards of directors and professional committees including The National Academy of Education, The Boston Globe, WGBH, and Bright Horizon's Family Solutions. She is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Board of Directors Chair. Additionally, she has been a Fellow at the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University
