The third annual New Music Festival showcases original arrangements and compositions performed by Berklee student groups in different styles. This year's artists include No Overdubs, Chezwick, Los Songos Jalapenos, Jon Robert, Natalie Harris, and Human Element. The six acts, whittled down from 27 entries, were chosen by students who are active performers and songwriters, on the basis of performing ability, creativity, and originality, with the goal of picking a variety of talent and making it a largely student-produced show.

No Overdubs (or NOOD) is comprised of Steven Foxx and Brian Nygard, two "beat-boxing" student MC's who will introduce the acts and do rapping and vaudevillian-style skits during the set changeovers.

Fronted by Patrick Balthrop, Chezwick combine elements of rock and electronica to produce a sonic buffet. A winner in VH-1's Song of the Year Contest, Balthrop's production and songwriting talents are creating a buzz. With life experiences gained in Chicago and Hong Kong, the thriving metropolis of the modern age seems to surface in every drum kick Chezwick produces. Raw talent and perfected technology meet head to head to give birth to the original sound of this act. Vocals, guitars, bass, laptop, and iPod provide the unique instrumentation and performance. Chezwick is noted for combining high-energy sets, soaring melodies, and award-winning songwriting.

Los Songos Jalapenos was born in 2004 at Berklee out of the search for a new type of expression in Latin jazz. They fuse the improvisational and harmonic concepts of modern jazz giants, such as John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy, with the rhythmic concepts of the rich Afro-Cuban tradition, but with a very unique and modern twist brought by percussionist and composer/arranger Andres Espinoza. Their shows are full of energy, enhanced by the strong groove of the tight rhythm section: Puerto Rican drummer Freddie Burgos; Connecticut native, bassist Brian Ladd; and Japanese pianist Ayako Higuchi. Also on the front line are two very distinctive musicians: Alto sax player and flutist Anthony Morris, who has a highly virtuosic altissimo approach, and Squantch on trombone, who has vast experience and an inimitable way of improvising.

"Make a dream tomorrow's reality," sings Boston-based singer-songwriter Jon Robert, offering a glimpse into his independent soul. His 2003 EP, Listen Loud, received a great deal of attention, leading to gigs opening for Howie Day and Matt Nathanson. Robert's roots range from Jackson Browne to Matchbox 20. In 1999, he fronted a band called Even-Tide, touring the college circuit opening for such acts as Eddie Money and the Fools. After spending three years in San Diego, CA, performing in coffeehouses, clubs, and bars as a solo acoustic pop act, Robert returned to his hometown and is filling up local clubs and colleges all over the Northeast. In December 2004, he signed with New York's Klub Records and is currently recording songs for his debut album Rewind.
