BOSTON, December 7, 2004 — 33 Berklee alumni were nominated for a total of 37 Grammy Awards in 20 categories today by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The nominees were recognized for their outstanding contributions in a wide variety of categories, including pop, r&b, rock, metal, jazz, Latin jazz, blues, classical crossover, country music, film scoring, and for achievement in audio engineering. Recordings released between October 1, 2003, and September 30, 2004, were eligible for nominations.

John Mayer '98 was nominated for two awards for the song "Daughters," in the categories Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, in which he won an award in 2002. Howard Shore '69 and John Scofield '73 were each nominated for two awards as well. Shore has won awards for each of the first two Lord of the Rings movies, and is nominated this time for his score of the final movie: Lord of the Rings-Return of the King. Scofield is nominated in the categories Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, and Best Classical Crossover Album.

Recording engineer/mixer Tony Maserati '86, who won a Grammy award last year, earned a nomination in the category Album of the Year, along with alums Juan Johnny Najera '99, Ken Lewis '91, Matt Marrin '98, for the Usher album Confessions.

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove '89, a two-time Grammy winner, is nominated in the category Best Contemporary Jazz Album for the release Strength.  Nominated in the same category are fellow alums Bob James '59 and Harvey Mason '68 of the group Fourplay, for Journey, and Bill Frisell '77 for Unspeakable.

There is no better place to prepare for a career in contemporary music than Berklee. Perhaps the best evidence of this is the success of the college's outstanding alumni.
