Cecil Adderley Named Chair of Berklee's Music Education Department

BOSTON, July 26, 2004 — Berklee College of Music is pleased to announce that Cecil Adderley has been named chair of the college's Music Education Department. Adderley, an accomplished educator, performer, and marching band director, will assume his new role August 1, 2004.

Adderley brings to Berklee 17 years of teaching experience at both the high school and college levels, including three years as Chair/Convenor of Music Education at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has performed professionally in the Charlotte, North Carolina Community Band and the Asheville, North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Adderley has considerable experience as a professional designer, drill instructor, and coordinator of drum and bugle corp-style marching bands. He has also served as an adjudicator for approximately 20 marching band festivals throughout the United States.

Adderley currently works with the National Educational Testing Service (ETS) where he evaluates the Praxis Test for Music Teachers. He holds teaching certification in North Carolina, South Carolina and New Jersey and is thoroughly knowledgeable about teacher licensing regulations and state requirements. Adderley has experience with music technology and he uses web-based instructional methods and materials including QuickTime movies of drill designs for marching bands. He has also written a number of published articles on topics that range from teacher preparation to strategies for teaching with technology, and he has given scholarly presentations at a number of national/international conferences.

Adderley holds a B.S. from Western Carolina University, an M.M. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.
