Berklee Alumni and Faculty Earn 14 Grammy Nominations

BOSTON, December 5, 2003 Twelve Berklee alumni and one current faculty member were nominated for a total of 14 GRAMMY® Awards yesterday by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The nominees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to pop, R&B, rock, jazz, Latin jazz, blues, classical crossover, world music, and film scoring, and for achievement in audio engineering. Eligible for nominations were recordings released between October 1, 2002 and September 30, 2003.

Recording engineer/mixer Tony Maserati '86 earned three nominations the most of any alum this year two for Record of the Year for "Crazy In Love" by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, and "Where Is The Love," by the Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake, as well as a nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for the Black Eyed Peas' Elephunk. (Maserati, who also engineered Queen Latifah's "Go Head," nominated for Best Female Rap Solo Performance, is at Berklee today to present two clinics for students in the college's Music Production and Engineering Department.)

The five-member band Train, which includes alumni Charlie Colin '88 and Rob Hotchkiss '82, received two nominations for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Calling All Angels," which was also nominated for Best Rock Song, an award to the songwriters, which include Colin.

Last year's winner for Best Latin Jazz Album, the Caribbean Jazz Project, with faculty member Dave Samuels and alumnus Dario Eskenazi ‘88, has once again been nominated in that category for their album Birds of a Feather.

Susan Tedeschi '91 received her third GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album for Wait For Me. (Tedeschi is one of several alumni returning to the college next Thursday, December 11, to perform in the 20th Anniversary Singers' Showcase Concert.)

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove '89, a previous GRAMMY winner in the jazz category, crossed genre lines with his group RH Factor Featuring D'Angelo, garnering a nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "I'll Stay," a track from Hard Groove.
