Steve Heck performed a set of original music at the ceremony. At the event, Heck received praise from friends and colleagues, including President Lee Eliot Berk, Piano Department Chair Stephany Tiernan, as well as Heck's former student and recent alumnus, pianist Oliver Rockberger.

"Today is a special day, because it is the very first Berklee facility named in honor of a member of our faculty," President Lee Eliot Berk said, adding, "This is truly a milestone and one that we will always treasure."

Stan Hatoff, a former piano student of Heck's, addressed the audience and presented Heck with a certificate of recognition from Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and an official resolution from the Boston City Council. "Steve's greatest asset is that he is happy with what he does," Hatoff said. "He is always anxious to go to work each morning. You young students at Berklee should take note of this. It is a great accomplishment."

The Steve Heck Room is located in the lobby of Berklee's central 1140 Boylston Street building, was created to function as the "heart of the facility." It is used as a small performance space, a place for both formal and informal faculty and student group meetings, as well as a setting for official Berklee gatherings and receptions.
