BOSTON, December 1, 2003 The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Greg Hopkins, will present its annual winter concert on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at 8:15 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, in Boston. Tickets are $5, $2 for seniors, and are available at the BPC box office, 617-747-2261.
The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra is one of the most prestigious performing groups at Berklee College of Music. The ensemble features the finest jazz instrumentalists in the college playing cutting-edge, original music written expressly for the group by the most accomplished jazz composers on campus, both faculty and students.
The group represents a true melting pot of musical talent from around the world. This year band members come from Portugal, Israel, Argentina, Denmark, and Canada, and from all over the United States.
Trumpeter, arranger, composer, and Professor of Jazz Composition, Greg Hopkins is known for his innovative approaches to music performance and pedagogy. He began his career in Detroit, playing jazz in big bands and backing up Motown acts, then went on to tour as soloist and arranger for the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Hopkins settled in Boston in 1974, to teach at Berklee College of Music, and continues to develop by writing and performing with a plethora of musicians around the world. He travels all over the world, teaching and playing, and has performed with Louis Bellson, Billy Maxted, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Hopkins is member of Tre Corda and also leads and records with his own quintet, nonet, and 16-piece jazz orchestra.
