The event will honor Dr. Gerhard Lengeling, co-founder and chief software architect of Emagic, with the sixth annual Golden Clef Award, recognizing Dr. Lengeling's contributions to the music industry as well as his personal commitment to music education. After graduating as a physician from Hamburg University, Dr. Lengeling decided to concentrate on his programming skills for music applications, and has been a pioneer in MIDI and music applications since 1982.

In 1992, Dr. Lengeling and Chris Adam founded Emagic, together with marketing specialist Sven Junge. Today, Dr. Lengeling remains passionately enthusiastic about the future of computer-aided music production, and is rightly renowned as one of the world's most active and influential developers of music and audio production solutions. On July 1st, 2002 Emagic became a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple Computers, Inc.

Past recipients of the Golden Clef Award include Mike Bates of Yamaha Corporation of America, Sandy Feldstein of Carl Fischer, Mike Kovins of Korg USA, John Paulson of Coda Music Technology, and Bill Schultz of Fender Musical Instruments.

Also at the January 19 event a Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to drummer Abe Laboriel, Jr. '93, whose performance and recording credits include work with Paul McCartney, Sting, Chris Isaak, Melissa Etheridge, Dianne Reeves, Steve Vai, Seal, and k.d. lang, to name a few.

In the few years since graduating from Berklee — the alma mater of his father, legendary bassist Abe Laboriel, Sr. '72, now a Herb Albert Visiting Professor — the talented percussionist has become very much in demand by musicians everywhere. Paul McCartney, with whom Laboriel, Jr. is currently touring, referred to Laboriel, Jr. on a recent ABC television special as "a serious drummer."

The award is given to alumni who bring honor and recognition to the college, and who display high standards in the industry.

Past recipients of Berklee's Distinguished Alumni Award include Branford Marsalis '80, Patty Larkin '74, John Scofield '73, Gillian Welch '92, Joe Mardin '85, and Ernie Watts '66, Lawrence Shragge '77, Albhy Galuten '68, Vinnie Colaiuta '75, the late Bill Berry '58, Terri Lyne Carrington '83, Neil Stubenhaus '75 and Abe Laboriel, Sr. '72.

Berklee's Executive Vice President Gary Burton will make the presentations to Lengeling and Laboriel.

Admission to the Berklee Alumni Brunch is $10.00 per person. Alumni who wish to attend the event should contact Leanne Summers, Alumni Chapter President, on or before January 17, 2003, at (818) 769-7260.
