Berklee's Annual Winds Day To Pay Tribute To Joe Viola

Memorial Concert to Feature Bill Pierce, George Garzone, Dino Govoni, Jim Odgren, Frank Tiberi, Matt Marvuglio, Shannon Le Claire, Bruce Nifong, and Tommy Ferrante

BOSTON, October 21, 2002 — Monday, November 4, 2002, has been designated Winds Day, Berklee College of Music's annual, all-day event that features Brass and Woodwind Department faculty and students plus guest artists. This year's Winds Day is dedicated to the memory of the late Joe Viola, who was a master woodwind player and Founding Chair of the Berklee College of Music Woodwind Department. All events are open to the public. All are free except for the evening's Joe Viola Memorial Concert at the Berklee Performance Center, 130 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Tickets are $5 for the general public, $2 for seniors, and are available at the Berklee Performance Center Box Office, 617-747-2261.

Winds Day events will kick off at 10:00 a.m. in the Berklee Performance Center with a concert by the Berklee Rainbow Band All-Stars, directed by trombonist and Brass Professor Phil Wilson. At 2:00 p.m. faculty and former students of Joe Viola will take part in a Panel Discussion about Joe in the David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston Street. A complete schedule of events is listed below.

When Joe Viola retired as Chair of Berklee's Woodwind Department in 1985, the trustees of the college created an endowed scholarship fund in his honor. The Woodwind Department is presenting the tribute concert to honor Joe's influence on their professional careers and personal lives, and to share his legacy by showcasing outstanding woodwind students. The concert will also feature some of Berklee's present faculty, including some of Joe's former students, such as Woodwind Chair Bill Pierce, George Garzone, and Dino Govoni. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Joe Viola Endowed Scholarship fund, to make it possible for more students to study at Berklee.
