BOSTON, October 18, 2002 — Berklee College of Music Provost Harry Chalmiers announced today that Mia Olson has been named assistant chair of the college's Harmony Department. An accomplished educator, flutist, and composer, Olson is an alumna of the college and has served on the faculty since 1996.

Olson's career as an educator began in 1984 with the opening of her own teaching studio, offering private instruction in flute and piano. She also taught private lessons at a number of area high schools before joining the faculty at Berklee, where she has taught courses in harmony, writing skills, jazz flute, and Latin jazz ensemble.

Highlights of Mia's performance career include numerous concerts, recordings, live radio broadcasts, and film soundtracks, including Claudio Ragazzi's score for Next Stop Wonderland and Danilo Perez's score for Hugo's Pool. She has performed with Edu Tancredi, Lance Gunderson, Peru Mestizo, and Tunnel 6 Band. Olson also has produced several solo recordings, including Images in 1994 and Sombrio in 2001, featuring pianist Joe Mulholland.

"I am honored to have been chosen as the assistant chair of the Harmony Department. It is great to have so much support from my colleagues throughout the college," Olson said. "I am looking forward to being able to implement some of the ideas that have come up over the past six years of teaching in the department."

Olson, originally from Stillwater, Minn., earned a bachelor's degree in classical flute performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a diploma in jazz flute performance from Berklee College of Music, and a master of music degree in contemporary improvisation from New England Conservatory. She has studied with Mary Wilson, Robert Cole, Matt Marvuglio, Bill Pierce, Charlie Banacos, and Danilo Perez.

Established in 1945, Berklee College of Music is the world's largest independent music college. Over 3,400 students and more than 450 faculty members interact in an environment designed to provide the most complete learning experience possible, including all of the opportunities and challenges presented by a career in the contemporary music industry. More than a college, Berklee has become the world's singular learning lab for the music of today — and tomorrow.
