BOSTON, September 13, 2002 — Berklee College of Music Provost Harry Chalmiers announced today that Jetro DaSilva has been named assistant chair of the college's Piano Department. DaSilva is an extremely accomplished pianist, producer, and musical director, bringing an impressive history of professional experience to the position.

DaSilva was born in Brazil and attended the Colegio de São Bento and the Escola Nacional de Música (UFRJ). He began performing professionally as a teenager, playing with some of Rio de Janerio's finest musicians, and eventually touring with Brazilian artists such as Emilio Santiago. In 1991, DaSilva arrived in Boston to pursue a degree in Music Production and Engineering at Berklee.

The list of performers with which DaSilva has performed is a veritable who's who of pop music, and includes Chaka Khan, The Pointer Sisters, Gladys Knight, Brandy, Brian McKnight, Bonnie Raitt, Luther Vandross, Celine Dion, and others. In 1999, he served as the primary keyboard player for Whitney Houston's U.S. and European tour, as well as her performance during the 2000 Grammys. That same year, he performed with Faith Hill and Brandy on the VH1 Special Diva's Live. This year, he became the new music director for Patti Labelle and accompanied her on tour.

DaSilva is endorsed by Midiman, Metric Halo, Clavia, Emagic, Applied Acoustics Systems, Propeller Head, and Technics Instruments.

"I am very exited to be appointed as the new assistant chair of the Piano Department. Berklee is like a family to me, and I am so glad to be back," DaSilva said. "The college has a wonderful piano faculty team. I am grateful that I will have the opportunity to give back to Berklee faculty and students, as well as the Boston community that so graciously gave me encouragement and confidence to pursue my dreams."

Established in 1945, Berklee College of Music is the world's largest independent music college. Over 3,400 students and more than 450 faculty members interact in an environment designed to provide the most complete learning experience possible, including all of the opportunities and challenges presented by a career in the contemporary music industry.
