BOSTON, February 15, 2002 Berklee College of Music President Lee Eliot Berk received the International Association for Jazz Education's Distinguished Service Award at the Gala Dinner hosted by Nancy Wilson and honoring Berklee alumnus Quincy Jones '51 on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, during the 29th Annual IAJE Conference in Long Beach, California. Presenting the Distinguished Service Award was IAJE Executive Director Bill McFarlin '81, who said, "As a Berklee alumnus, I am very pleased to present the IAJE Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Lee Eliot Berk, President of Berklee College of Music. The award is presented in recognition of his past service as a member of the IAJE Executive Board and for his significant philanthropic support to further IAJE's mission and programs."
McFarlin continued, "The Lawrence Berk Leadership Award, presented annually to an individual whose efforts to organizationally strengthen and further the mission of IAJE, is endowed by Berklee College of Music in memory of Berklee Founder and President Emeritus Lawrence Berk. A recent pledge will bring the total in the IAJE Berklee fund to over $100,000. This represents the largest single institutional commitment to IAJE in our history, and we extend our sincere appreciation to Lee and Berklee College of Music."
