BOSTON, December 21, 2001 Berklee College of Music will once again share its musical knowledge and talents with over 7,000 attendees from 35 countries at the 29th Annual International Association of Jazz Educators Conference 2002. IAJE's "Uniting the Global Jazz Community" takes place from January 9 to 12, 2002, at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, CA. A free reception for Berklee alumni and guests will be held on Friday, January 11th, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Renaissance Ballrooms 4 and 5 at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, near the Convention Center. The Berklee Rainbow Band will perform at the reception.
Several Berklee faculty members will present clinics, panels, and performances at the conference. One of the high-profile jazz acts who will be featured at evening concerts each night is Berklee Executive VP Gary Burton, five-time Grammy award-winning vibraphonist, who will perform with fellow Berklee alumnus, pianist Makoto Ozone. The duo will perform Friday night, January 11, at the American Jazz Masters Awards Concert honoring Frank Foster, Percy Heath, and McCoy Tyner. Also performing that evening will be the IAJE "Sisters in Jazz" Collegiate All-Stars sponsored by BET on Jazz.
Berklee student pianist Daniela Schaechter '02 wins IAJE "Sisters in Jazz" Competition
Berklee is honored to be represented once again this year in the IAJE "Sisters in Jazz" Collegiate All-Stars, which will perform at Friday evening's concert and again on Saturday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. Berklee student pianist Daniela Schaechter '02, of Messina, Italy, was named a winner in the IAJE "Sisters in Jazz" Competition, which was designed to support and promote more female involvement in jazz education. For the fifth year in a row, female college student jazz instrumentalists and vocalists from around the world competed via taped audition for an all-expenses-paid trip to perform with the IAJE "Sisters in Jazz" Collegiate All-Stars. Previous Berklee students who have received this honor include tenor saxophonist Anat Cohen '98 of Tel Aviv; trombonist Kari Harris '00 of Seattle; pianist Chihiro Yamanaka '00 of Tokyo, Japan; and drummer Karen Teperberg '01 of Kfar Saba, Israel.
Schaechter, who was awarded last year Berklee's first Terri Lyne Carrington Endowed Scholarship for outstanding female instrumentalists, will also perform on Thursday, January 10, at 5:00 p.m. with the Tiger Okoshi Quartet, which includes fellow Berklee students Justin Purtill on bass, and Sam Duehsler on drums, and Brass Associate Professor Tiger Okoshi on trumpet. The group was the highlight at last summer's International Trumpet Guild Conference.
The Berklee Rainbow Band Will Feature Some of the College's Finest Student Instrumentalists From Around the World
The Berklee Rainbow Band will perform twice at the alumni reception Friday, and at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Under the direction of Professor Phil Wilson, the band will feature vocalist Alisa Miles and trumpeter/vocalist Christine Fawson, as well as Argentine composer Nicolas Sorin. Celebrating its 37th year, the Rainbow Band is one of Berklee's oldest and most prestigious ensembles. Comprised of students from all over the world, the band has earned a reputation as one of this country's top college groups performing contemporary jazz, appearing on national television and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Berklee alumni who played with the Rainbow Band over the past 37 years include Roy Hargrove '89, Cyrus Chestnut '85, John Scofield '73, Makoto Ozone '83, Abe Laboriel, Jr. '93 and Sr. '72, Ernie Watts '66, Terri Lyne Carrington '83, Richie Cole '67, and Bill Pierce '73. Five years ago, Phil Wilson established a Berklee scholarship in his name to provide opportunities for some of the band's extraordinary performers.
Berklee City Music All-Stars Makes IAJE Debut
For the first time ever, students from the Berklee City Music Program have been invited to perform at the IAJE Conference. Founded in 1991, "Berklee City Music" provides deserving Boston secondary school students with a music education at no charge, through the 5-week Summer Youth Scholarship for Talent and Excellence in Music (SYSTEM 5) program, City Music Saturday School, and an after-school mentoring program. Each year the program also awards up to four full-tuition scholarships to study at Berklee full-time. The City Music All-Stars will perform at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 11, under the direction of Ensemble Assistant Professor Winston Maccow.
Piano Associate Professor Joanne Brackeen to Perform Solo
One of Berklee's world-renowned faculty members, Arkadia Jazz recording artist Joanne Brackeen will perform a solo piano concert at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10.
Music Business/Management Chair Don Gorder on Music Industry Panel
Besides being the IAJE Resource Team representative for Music Business and Management, Berklee Music Business/Management Chair Don Gorder will take part in a panel discussion on Saturday, January 12, at 4:00 p.m. called "Jazziz Presents Business First: Selling Real Jazz in Unreal Times," which will be a Forbes-like approach to the business of jazz, discussing the realities of jazz in the marketplace, and what steps the jazz industry can take to maximize the potential to thrive and survive.
Piano Associate Professor Laszlo Gardony Plays with Faculty Trio
The Laszlo Gardony trio will play Gardony's original compositions and original arrangements of standards from his new CD Behind Open Doors (Sunnyside). The CD features Laszlo Gardony (piano), Percussion Associate Professor Jamey Haddad (drums/percussion) and Bass Associate Professor John Lockwood (bass), who will all perform at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12.
Ear Training Assistant Professor August Watters Presents Session on Strings
August Watters will present a clinic "Arranging and Composing for Jazz String Ensembles" at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9 that will cover idiomatic string considerations such as instrumentation, ranges, bowing and fingering, use of double stops, string phrasing, and instrument doublings; and general jazz arranging and composing techniques as they apply to string ensembles.
Percussion Professor Victor Mendoza Presents Latin Jazz Clinic
Vibist Victor Mendoza will present a clinic called "Aspects of Latin Jazz Improvisation" at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9.
Professional Education Dean Dr. Lawrence McClellan to Perform
Dr. Larry McClellan will play trombone with the Lou Fischer Big Band on Friday and Saturday mornings at 10:00. Every year since 1994, the band has sight-read new charts for high school and college band directors.
Berklee College of Music will also be among over 150 companies and organizations exhibiting their products and services in the Jazz Industry Exposition.
