BOSTON, Oct. 22, 2001 -- Robert Morrison, vice president of public affairs for VH1, and CEO of the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, has been appointed to the Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees. The appointment was announced by Allan T. McLean, Vice President of Lynch Associates/TBG Financial, and board chair of Berklee.
A longtime supporter of music education, Morrison is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading advocates for music and arts education in public schools. His efforts on behalf of VH1 Save The Music have garnered many prestigious awards, including an EMMY and a PEABODY award. Since its inception, VH1 Save The Music has restored music programs to over 750 public schools.
Some of the high-profile initiatives Morrison has implemented include the VH1 "Save The Music Today Week" on NBC's Today Show, the VH1 Save The Music benefit shows "Divas Live 2000," "Men Strike Back," and "The Concert of the Century," an all-star concert featuring the president and first lady, live from the White House.
"I am truly honored to be associated with this tremendous institution," said Morrison. "I have also admired the work of Lee and the entire faculty throughout my career. The opportunity to work with such an impressive board of trustees while helping to advise Berklee on the ever changing landscape of music and young people makes this appointment a personal a professional highlight for me."
Berklee President Lee Eliot Berk welcomed Morrison to the Berklee community, commenting, "Bob Morrison's entire professional career has been devoted to expanding music education opportunity. One can't imagine a better fit with the values of Berklee than the commitment, knowledge, and experience that Bob brings to our board."
In addition to his work with VH1, Morrison currently serves on several music and education policy boards. He was a founding member of the National Coalition for Music Education, the Arts Education partnership, and has worked to promote the National Standards for Arts Education. In 1998 he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Music Distributors Association and in 1996 with the Mr. Holland's Opus Award.
Founded in 1945, Berklee College of Music has been advancing careers in contemporary music for more than 50 years. The world's largest independent college of music, Berklee has a multicultural enrollment of more than 3,400 students, more than 30 percent of whom are international. The college's alumni include some of the most respected figures in contemporary music, including many multi-Grammy award winners.
