BOSTON, October 26,2000 On Thursday, October 19, 2000, Berklee College of Music presented the first annual scholarship in its history to be awarded specifically to a female instrumentalist. The Terri Lyne Carrington Endowed Scholarship, named for the drummer and 1983 Berklee alumna, was awarded this year to pianist and Performance major Daniela Schachter '02 during a concert at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston. In addition to performances by Terri Lyne Carrington and scholarship winner Daniela Schachter, the concert featured an all-star Berklee student scholarship band.
The Terri Lyne Carrington Endowed Scholarship was established this year through a major gift from Craigie Zildjian, Berklee Trustee and CEO of the Avedis Zildjian Company. Zildjian attended the event and presented the award to Schachter. At the age of 12, Terri Lyne Carrington was the youngest performer ever selected to endorse Zildjian products, a relationship she has maintained for over 23 years with the Norwell, Mass.-based cymbal manufacturer.
Considered a musical prodigy by many, Medford, Mass. native Terri Lyne Carrington was awarded a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music at the age of 11 by Berklee founder Lawrence Berk. Carrington enjoys a successful career in the music industry as a drummer, composer, and producer. "I wish everyone could have the kind of experience that I had at Berklee. And I met the Zildjian people at about the same time, " said Carrington. "These have been my two families in the business, Berklee and Zildjian, and their support has made all the difference. I will always be grateful to them for what they have done for me."
While still a student, Carrington performed with such artists as Kevin Eubanks and Branford Marsalis and has gone on to work with artists Stan Getz, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Wayne Shorter, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and others. Carrington's production credits include Dianne Reeves' recent release "That Day" (Blue Note, 1997) and her own Polygram release, the Grammy-nominated "Real Life Story" (1989).
Scholarship recipient Daniela Schachter '02, from Messina, Italy, is an alumna of the Berklee Summer School held each year at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. "When I got my scholarship from Berklee at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy," said Schachter, "at first I thought I was dreaming. Then I realized that this was an opportunity to build my career. I started believing in myself as a musician. Since that moment my life has changed. Now, after two semesters, I feel more mature and prepared. But I won't stop here. I want to become better and better, and Berklee has given me the chance."
The October 19th concert also featured an all-star Berklee student scholarship band including vibist Warren Wolf, bassist Mark Kelley, drummer Kendrick Scott, tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III, and pianist Milton Fletcher.
