BOSTON, Sept. 14, 2000 The band CASH, comprised of four Berklee College of Music students, is one of three finalists in "Teen People" magazine's competition for the best up-and-coming bands whose members are age 21 or younger. Over 700 bands entered the competition. CASH was one of five semi-finalists who won $500 and competed for three spots in the final contest. The three finalists will be flown to New York City on November 8, 2000, to participate in a musical showdown at the "Teen People"-sponsored "What's Next?" party at the famed Apollo Theatre.
The mother of CASH band member Jeremy Black sent the group's self-titled CD "CASH" to "Teen People" in January, entering their song "Smash Your Radio" in the magazine's band competition. The group was notified in June that they were chosen from over 700 bands as one of five semi-finalists in "Teen People"'s "Five Live Search," restricted to bands whose members are age 21 and under. Callers to the contest's toll-free phone line heard 15-seconds of each song by the five semi-finalists and voted through September 1.
The band met in the fall of 1998 in the dormitory at Berklee College of Music in Boston, when they entered the college as freshmen. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Sam Cohen '02 (Houston, TX), bassist Deejay Foster '02 (Andalucia, Spain), and drummer Jeremy Black '02 (Katonah, NY) formed the band CASH a month later. In May of 1999, the trio released its CD "CASH," featuring the song "Smash Your Radio," which has been played on Boston radio stations WBCN-fm and WFNX-fm, as well as numerous college stations.
Last year the group added guitarist Eric Haugen '02 (Metuchen, NJ). CASH toured this past summer on the East Coast, from Georgia to New York City, with new bassist Ryan Schick '01 (Danbury CT), who replaced Deejay Foster in the band. For the final competition at the Apollo, CASH will perform without Ryan, who is 22-years-old, and over the age limit for the contest. Eric Haugen will play bass in the final competition.
CASH describes its original music as Beatles/Led Zeppelin/Elvis Costello-influenced rock-and-roll. The band is managed by Michael Creamer, who also manages the Boston-based bands Letters to Cleo and The Sheila Divine.
