The Really Eclectic String Quartet |

|
Boston, Sept. 12, 2000 -- The Really Eclectic String Quartet (RESQ), featuring Berklee faculty members Mimi Rabson and Melissa Howe, will bring its unique blend of folk, funk, jazz and classical string music to the David Friend Recital Hall, 921 Boylston St., on the campus of Berklee College of Music on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Hailed as "truly original and marvelous" by famed violinist Yehudi Menuhin, RESQ brings the classical string quartet into the popular music realm. Using bass instead of cello, RESQ's grooving repertoire ranges from Texas swing to klezmer to James Brown to samba, including many distinctly original compositions. The quartet's sound has been characterized by music critics as "Monk and punk," and "Bartok meets the Sex Pistols."
RESQ (pronounced "rescue") is lead by violinist/violist Mimi Rabson, assistant professor at Berklee and an 18-year veteran of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Rabson also composes and arranges much of RESQ's music. She is joined by violinist/violist Melissa Howe, associate professor at Berklee and a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade and Boston Ballet Orchestras; violinist Eric Bindman, who collaborated with jazz educator Dave Baker on a groundbreaking book about jazz improvisation for violin; and bassist Jim Guttman, an accomplished performer recently profiled in Bass Player magazine.
Equally comfortable in concert halls and night clubs, RESQ has performed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Boston Globe Jazz Festival, as well as Boston-area nightspots like Johnny D's and The Middle East. The quartet's second recording "To The RESQ" is now available on compact disc.
RESQ's concert on October 3 at the David Friend Recital Hall begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
