PODCAST: Jeremy De Jesus

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Jeremy De Jesus grew up in a house listening to some of his mother's favorite artists, such as Earth Wind & Fire, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, and Jobim. At 15, the flutist received a full scholarship to Berklee's Five-Week summer program, and within a few years, he was a full-time Berklee student, also on a full scholarship. While he was a student, De Jesus released his debut album, Semi Formal. He was 21 at the time.

Since leaving Berklee in 2011—De Jesus majored in jazz composition—he has continued to develop his skills as a performer, composer, and arranger. His original compositions are influenced by a wide range of music styles, including jazz, Afro-Caribbean, salsa, neo-soul, R&B, and hip-hop. He has performed with Giovanni Hidalgo, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Charlie Sepulveda, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Terri Lyne Carrington, among others.

He will give a free outdoor concert in Boston on July 11—a highlight of Berklee's Tito Puente Latin Music Series and Summer in the City.
