Student Profiles: Lollapalooza Scholarship Winners
Luisa Sales Winner of the Lollapalooza Brazil Scholarship
Luisa Sales Rangel, a 25 year-old singer-songwriter from Brazil, was awarded the 2013 Lollaplooza Brazil scholarship to attend Berklee’s Valencia campus and obtain her master’s in contemporary performance.
The scholarship comes from a partnership between Berklee and Lollapalooza. “The essence of Lollapalooza is about artist discovery and providing opportunity for emerging bands to reach new audiences,” says Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell. The partnership aims to bring more outstanding musicians to Berklee, to enable them to refine their musical skills through study at an international level.
“It’s been an amazing experience, because you have access to great teachers who are great performers and musicians,” said Rangel, who is appreciative that the scholarship made it possible for her to attend the master’s program. “The experience of living abroad is very important. It’s a great exchange of knowledge.”
Juan Cristobal Aliaga Winner of the Lollapalooza Chile Scholarship
Twenty-nine-year-old guitarist Juan Cristobal Aliaga was awarded the Lollapalooza Chile Scholarship to attend Berklee’s Valencia campus. where he is studying the master’s in contemporary performance.
“I am really happy to be the first person from Chile to have this scholarship,” says Aliaga, who is one of the four guitarists currently studying at the campus situated at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain. “Teachers here are very committed to what they teach. We have been getting a lot of practical experience; it’s very good to open yourself to the form of art as well as the music business in general.”
The scholarship comes from a partnership between Berklee and Lollapalooza Chile; both share the common goal of providing opportunity and preparation for emerging young talent to succeed in the global music business.
