Rudresh K. Mahanthappa '92 recently received a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship in music composition. His coursework will entail two trips to India to study some specific melodic and rhythmic aspects of Carnatic music. Based on that study, he will be developing electronic audio processing strategies (both live and composed) that incorporate those Carnatic concepts. Ideally, the fellowship period will culminate in a body of work for an ensemble that involves both western and Indian instruments with an electronic component.
