Boston Music Awards and Berklee Search for Boston's Best Young Musicians
BOSTON, October 7, 1997 -- The Kahlua Boston Music Awards and Berklee College of Music are on a mission to discover outstanding young musicians in Greater Boston. The most outstanding will receive the Discover Award on stage during the awards ceremony, and a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program.
This is the second time the two institutions have teamed to uncover promising new talent. For the next two months, high school students, and young adults under 20, from Boston, Cambridge, Brookline, Somerville, and Newton are invited to submit tapes demonstrating their singing or playing ability to a listening committee comprised of representatives from both organizations. Five entrants will be chosen to perform for a panel of music industry professionals in a showcase at Berklee on December 20. On January 15, 1998, the young musician selected as having the most promising musical talent will be called to the Orpheum Theater stage to accept the Discover Award and scholarship during the 11th annual Kahlua Boston Music Awards.
The scholarship is made possible by Berklee City Music, a community outreach program that provides full-tuition Berklee scholarships to deserving Boston high school students. The scholarships allow recipients to attend Berklee's summer performance program and an after-school mentoring program, or to attend the college full-time, at no charge.
The Kahlua Boston Music Awards is dedicated to not only recognizing those who have made outstanding contributions to the local and national music industry through recorded music and live performances, but also to nurturing and developing new talent who someday may also impact the music industry.
